I wrote this piece approaching a time when my paternal grandmother became aware she was entering the final stages of her life. She asked my Dad to arrange a performance she could attend as a frail older woman. We ended up hauling all my equipment from Liverpool to the house in Wales where my parents still reside, and my Aunt drove my Nan up from Brighton. So I performed to her - Eva Myrtle Maund - and other members of my immediate family one Sunday afternoon. This version was recorded by Rory Ballantyne in late 2014, and was done in a similar fashion: intimate, live, in one take. I got a lot out of this transitional moment musically; the piece has an emotional resonance difficult to put into words. Technically this solo instrumental inhabits a space between guitar music and synthesized/electronic music: it makes use of a granular synth pedal quite heavily, as well as chorus/flanger/phaser effects, but it has at its core an electric guitar going into an amplifier after all. Artifice and edifice coats the wooden, the telluric, the old-fashioned. Naturally I have melanchollicaly charged and fond memories of playing this for my Nan, and of the experience recording with Rory - the kindest engineer you could ask for. I hope you enjoy it as much.
